چکیده

INTRODUCTION How do birds, like flamingos (Phoenicopteridae), sleep while standing on one leg? It is suggested that this behavior reduces heat energy lost through the legs [1]. Yet, the muscular energy required to actively support the body in this pose would likely offset any thermal benefits. In particular, flamingo femurs are oriented horizontally (Figure 1), which places the knee and hip joints in an unfavorable position for generating muscular torques to oppose gravity. We found a passive, gravity-driven mechanism in the proximal pelvic limb of the flamingo that allows sleeping and even dead birds to support their body weight on a single leg without any muscular activation at all.

Mechanical evidence that flamingos can support their body on one leg with little active muscular force.

Flamingos (Phoenicopteridae) often stand and sleep on one leg for long periods, but it is unknown how much active muscle contractile force they use for the mechanical demands of standing on one leg: body weight support and maintaining balance. First, we demonstrated that flamingo cadavers could passively support body weight on one leg without any muscle activity while adopting a stable, unchang...

Non-linear feeding functional responses in the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) predict immediate negative impact of wetland degradation on this flagship species

Accurate knowledge of the functional response of predators to prey density is essential for understanding food web dynamics, to parameterize mechanistic models of animal responses to environmental change, and for designing appropriate conservation measures. Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), a flagship species of Mediterranean wetlands, primarily feed on Artemias (Artemia spp.) in comme...

The Development of a Passive False Twister Mechanism in Handling Low Strength Cotton Slivers on High Draft Spinning Machine

A passive false twist unit (spiral) has been developed to assist with the handling lowstrength slivers on a high speed-spinning machine with a high-speed feed. In the first trial, a falsetwist simulator device was constructed to determine whether the passive false twist unit can be usedon high speed feeding with different can distance from the feeding device. In the second trial, theeffects of ...
